#22 HORNETS SPLIT DOUBLE HEADER AT FT. HAYS STATE

ESU 8, at FHSU 0 (6)
at FHSU 2, ESU 1

April 22, 2008-The #22 Emporia State softball team split a double header at Ft. Hays State on Tuesday, winning the first game 8-0 in six innings before falling 2-1 in the second game.

April Huddleston and Jennifer Dace had the big bats in the matinee for ESU. Huddleston went three for three with a homer, a double and three RBI while Dace was two for three with three RBI for the Hornets. ESU broke a scoreless tie in the third inning on Jessie Wiard’s RBI single to right field. She would later score on a sac fly by Dace for a 2-0 ESU lead. The Hornets came back to score five runs in the fourth inning. Huddleston led off the inning with a home run to center and ended the scoring for the inning when she was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. In between Dace delivered a two RBI single through the right side. The Hornets picked up their final run in the sixth when Nicole Bergley single in pinch runner Mandi Dennis. Samantha Sheeley, who was named MIAA Pitcher of the Week earlier in the day, went the distance in the circle. She tossed a one hitter and delivered her third shut out in her last four starts.

The night cap saw ESU strand eight runners with six of them in scoring position in the 2-1 loss. The Hornets took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning despite not having a hit when Mandi Dennis was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. The lead held up until the sixth as Megan Dennis allowed only three hits through the first five innings. FHSU’s Emily Herl led off the sixth with a triple and stayed at third when Sara Tani reached on a fielder’s choice. Jessika Anastos walked to load the bases and Hallie McMillen tied the score with a single to left that chased Dennis from the circle. Sheeley came on to pitch and got Adrian Mohr to pop up to second. She then coaxed Anna Herl into ground ball to short that allowed Huddleston to gun down Tani at the plate for the second out. Anastos would score the go ahead run on a wild pitch before Sheeley could strike out Chelsea Luther to end the inning.

ESU, now 33-14 overall and 12-2 in the MIAA, is back in action this weekend at Pittsburg State on Saturday before wrapping up the MIAA schedule on Sunday against Washburn at Turnbull Field in the Trusler Sports Complex. Sunday is “Swarm the Stands” Day at Trusler and all fans wearing black and gold will be admitted free of charge. First pitch for the Senior Day double header is set for 3 p.m.
