HORNET SOCCER LOSES HEARTBREAKER IN DOUBLE OVERTIME

October 22, 2009 -- The Emporia State soccer team fell 2-1 in double overtime to Northwest Missouri. ESU dominated the second half of play getting five of their six shots on goal.

Northwest Missouri got the scoring started in the 74th minute as Andrea Tritz scored on a centered pass from Sara Meidlinger. ESU would answer in the 80th minute as Amanda Penney took a deflection in the box and found the right corner for the net for her first goal of the season. ESU had another goal oppurtunity called back in the 89th minute as Tessa Pettyjohn scored only to have it waived off for a foul.

ESU dominated the first overtime as Amanda Penney had two more shots just miss the goal. Northwest would get the game-winning tally in the 106th minute as Heidi Sobota scored an unassisted goal as the wet ball slipped through Nikki Schmitz's fingers.

Penney finished with four shots, all four of them on goal. Jessica Decker and Sarah Anderson also finished with shots on goal. Schmitz finished with seven saves on the afternoon.

ESU will travel to Central Missouri for a 1 p.m. kick-off on Oct. 24 from Warrensburg, Mo.
