
November 7, 2009-Emporia State's Sheldon Smith had 312 yards of total offense and was responsible for four touchdowns, but it wasn't enough as Washburn scored 21 points on two blocked punts and an ESU fumble on a kick-off as the Ichabods defeated the Hornets 56-35 in the Turnpike Tussle on Jones Field at Welch Stadium.
Michael Krajicek blocked a Tyler Chilson punt on ESU's opening possession and Brad Haug returned it seven yards for a 7-0 lead with 12:58 left in the first quarter. Shjaun Richardson fumbled the ensuing kick off and two plays later Dane Simoneau found Brad Cole for an 11 yard touchdown pass and a 14-0 lead. ESU came back with a five play, 80 yard drive to cut the lead to 14-7 on Danny McEvoy's juggling, 68 yard touchdown catch and run. Washburn went up 21-7 when Simoneau's hooked up with Cole again, this time on a 20 yard pass with 6:28 left in the quarter. The Hornets came back with a 12 play, 72 yard drive capped by Sheldon Smith's four yard touchdown run with 45 seconds remaining in the quarter to pull within 21-14.
Washburn went back up by two scores on Brad Haug's two yard touchdown run with 11:09 left in the first half. LaDarrian Page got ESU back within seven points on a 23 yard touchdown run with 7:01 left in the half. After the two teams traded punts on the next four possessions, Shaunquez Powell intercepted Simoneau and returned it 50 yards to set up a 32 yard pass from Smith to McEvoy with 21 seconds left in the half to tie the score at 28-28.
The Ichabods took control of the game with 28 points in the third quarter. After going up 42-28 on a couple of long drives, Krajicek got his second block of the game and returned it himself for a 49-28 lead and then made it 56-28 on a 55 yard pass from Simoneau to Drameagon Powers with 26 seconds left in the period.
ESU got their final points on a 13 play, 84 yard drive, capped by Smith's two yard run with 47 seconds left.
Smith ended the game seven of 13 for 176 yards and two touchdowns with an interception and gained 136 yards on 34 carries with two touchdowns. He became the first Hornet quarterback to rush for over 100 yards in a game since Kelton Copeland gained 116 against East Central (Okla.) in 2001. Danny McEvoy had three catches for 128 yards and two touchdowns in his final game in a Hornet uniform.
