HORNET FOOTBALL FALLS TO NEBRASKA-OMAHA

October 3, 2009-Nebraska-Omaha scored with 31 seconds left in the first half on a six play, 68 yard drive that took less than a minute and then scored on a blocked punt to open the third quarter on the way to a 34-13 win over Emporia State on Saturday on Jones Field at Welch Stadium. Red-shirt freshman Tyler Eckenrode was 16 of 30 for 225 yards in his first career start for ESU.

UNO struck first with a 19 yard Greg Zuerlein field goal at the 5:24 mark of the first quarter and went up 10-0 on a Levi Terrell 67 yard touchdown run. The Hornets cut the lead to 10-6 on a Kevin Smart 14 yard touchdown run with 1:55 left in the first quarter. Eckenrode connected with LaDarrian Page on a 58 yard pass during the drive to set up the touchdown. The Mavericks made it 13-6 following a 17 play, 75 yard drive that ended with a Zuerlein 26 yard field goal with 4:26 left in the half. UNO scored on a 20 yard pass from Greg Wunderlich to Mike Higgins to extend the lead to 20-6 at the half.

The second half opened with Chris Woods intercepting a Wunderlich pass with 12:52 left in the third quarter. ESU went three and out on the ensuing possession setting up the blocked punt by Jason Zabka that was returned by Marcus Hall-Oliver for a 27-6 lead.

The Hornets came back with a ten play, 70 yard drive to get the ball to the Maverick two yard line. UNO responded with a huge goal line stand, twice stopping ESU just outside the endzone. After turning the ball over on downs, ESU got the ball right back on an interception by Tyrone Weaver with 4:16 left in the third. Smart scored on Smart's second touchdown of the game to cut the lead to 27-13 with 2:04 left in the quarter. UNO would seal the win with an 11 play, 64 yard drive capped by a two yard touchdown run by Terrell.

Smart ended the game with 55 yards on 16 carries with two touchdowns. Page had a career high 106 yards receiving on five catches and added 28 yards on eight carries for the Hornets. Harold Ayodele had a career high 12 tackles for the Hornets.

Terrell had his second straight 192 yard rushing effort on 34 carries with two touchdowns. Wunderlich, the MIAA's passing leader entering the day, ended the game with 179 yards on 14 of 29 passes with two interceptions and a touchdown.

The Hornets will travel to Pittsburg State next weekend to take on the Gorillas. Kick-off from Carnie Smith Stadium is set for 2 p.m.
