HORNET FOOTBALL RELEASES 2009 SCHEDULE

Complete Release in .pdf

March 18, 2009-After going 4-2 on Jones Field at Welch Stadium during the 2008 season, the Emporia State football Hornets will again have six home games during the 2009 season.

The Hornets will open the season on Thursday, August 27 with a Super Region 4 contest against Southwestern Oklahoma State.  The Bulldogs finished 3-8 last season.  This will be the first Thursday night game at Welch Stadium since a 13-10 win over Ft. Hays State on August 26, 2004.

ESU will then hit the road to open Augustana's Kirkeby-Over Stadium in Sioux Falls, S.D.  The Hornets defeated the Mineral Water Bowl Champion Vikings 27-14 last season at Welch Stadium.

Emporia State will celebrate Family Day on September 12 with the MIAA opener against Central Missouri.  ESU is 14-4 all-time in MIAA home openers.

The Hornets then go on the road for games at Missouri Southern and Ft. Hays State, before returning to Welch Stadium to take on Neb.-Omaha on October 3.  It will be the first trip to Emporia by the Mavericks since 1973.

ESU will travel to in-state rival Pittsburg State on October 10 in the middle game of three straight against NCAA Division II playoff teams from last year.

The Hornets play three of their final four games on Jones Field at Welch Stadium, beginning with four-time national runner-up Northwest Missouri on October 17.  ESU will make the longest MIAA road trip of the year on October 24 when they travel to Kirksville, Mo. to take on Truman.

Emporia State celebrates a Halloween Homecoming on October 31 when the Hornets play host to Missouri Western.  ESU will end the regular season against Washburn on November 7 for the 106th time in the series history.  The Turnpike Tussle is the most played active rivalry on the NCAA Division II level.

The Hornets were 4-7 a year ago with three of the losses coming by eight points or less.  After playing between 20-25 freshmen last season, ESU is set to return 20 players that started at least four games a year ago.
