September 19, 2009-The Emporia State football team tied a school record by throwing six interceptions in a 34-13 loss at Missouri Southern. The first two interceptions were bobbled by Hornet receivers.
The Hornets were behind 14-0 when Kevin Smart scored on a 46 yard rush with 7:44 left in the first half. The Lions scored on a seven play 47 yard drive following Andre Sloan El's third interception to take a 20-6 lead with 10:42 left in the third quarter. MSSU went up 27-6 with 14:25 left in the game on a 46 yard pass from Collin Howard to Daniel Thompson on a broken play that saw Howard almost get sacked twice before finding Thompson.
ESU would go 80 yards on nine plays to pull within 27-13 on a four yard touchdown pass from Sloan El to Danny McEvoy on fourth and two with 11:57 left in the game. Southern would put the final points on the board on another Howard to Thompson connection, this time for five yards with 7:49 left in the game.
Sloan El ended the game 16 of 42 for 103 yards, five interceptions and a touchdown and also had 12 carries for 56 yards. McEvoy had seven catches for 74 yards and a touchdown while Kevin Smart gained 56 yards on four carries with a touchdown. Katrell Larkins had a game high 13 tackles while Blake Ringwall added 11 stops with two tackles for loss.
The Hornets are back on the road next week when they travel to Ft. Hays State. Kick-off from Lewis Field in Hays, Kan. is set for 7 p.m.
