HORNET FOOTBALL FALLS ON THE ROAD AT AUGUSTANA

September 5, 2009-The Emporia State football team could not overcome four turnovers in a 32-21 loss at Augustana in the first ever game at Kirkby-Over Stadium.

After forcing the Vikings into a three and out on the first series, the Hornets took an early lead when LaDarrian Page went 68 yards for a touchdown on ESU's second play from scrimmage. The extra point was blocked and ESU led 6-0 at the 12:56 mark. Augie Came back with a seven play, 70 yard drive culminating with a three yard Tyler Schulte run. Harold Ayodele blocked the Viking PAT to remain tied at 6-6 with 10:06 left in the first quarter.

Augie took the lead on a 12 yard touchdown pass from Luke Butler to Schulte on the first play of the second quarter. They pushed the lead to 20-6 on a another Butler to Schulte touchdown pass of 15 yards with :21 left in the half.
The Hornets held the Vikings to a pair of third quarter field goals and cut the lead to 26-13 on an Andre Sloan El 11 yard rush to start the fourth quarter. On the ensuing AC possession, Julian Dozier forced a fumble that Nathan Linsey recovered at the Augie 35 yard line. Sloan El was then intercepted on fourth and eight from the AC 33 to end the threat.

The teams traded three and outs until Zach Rampy and Adrian Abner fumbled a hand off at the ESU 11 yard line with 9:20 left. Schulte scored his fourth touchdown of the day on the next play and the Vikings took a 32-13 lead.
Tyler Eckenrode came in for ESU’s final two possessions and led ESU to a nine play, 50 yard drive. His one yard pass to Dominic Mirocke made the final score 32-21.

LaDarrian Page ended with 96 yards on 14 carries and a touchdown for ESU while Danny McEvoy caught five passes for 100 yards.

Hornet linebackers Matt Rosenhamer, Vince Harris and Katrel Larkins all had seven tackles to lead ESU while Harold Ayodele added six tackles and a sack to his blocked kick.

The Hornets are back on Jones Field at Welch Stadium on September 12 to open MIAA play against Central Missouri. Kick-off is set for 1 p.m. with the 6th Annual Football Traditions Bar-BQ to follow the game.
