NOTE: This is the final installment in a six part series of sketches of the ESU Hornet Football Positions. ESU's Football Media Day is set for Sunday, August 16 at 6 p.m. in Welch Stadium.
QUARTERBACKS AND RECEIVERS END INTERVIEWS
August 14, 2009-The quarterbacks and receivers will end the 2009 training camp interview schedule for Emporia State on Friday, August 14 outside the Lakeview Cafeteria.
A key to the Hornets success will be a healthy Andre Sloan El. The senior signal caller has played in just 18 of 22 games in his first two years at ESU, but is poised to move into the top four in career passing yards and career total offense with a healthy 2009. ESU was 3-1 in his first four starts before getting injured in the second quarter of the Ft. Hays State game. Up to the point of his injury, he had produced 799 yards of total offense and was responsible for eight touchdowns in just over 12 quarters of action. He missed almost two full games with the injury but still managed to rank sixth in the MIAA in passing efficiency and seventh in total yards and passing yards. He is the third leading quarterback returning in the conference in those three categories.
Zach Rampy saw action in nine games at quarterback as a redshirt freshman with a start at Central Missouri. He completed over 50 percent of his passes with a 2-1 touchdown to interception ratio on the season.
Sheldon Smith played the entire second half of the UCM game at quarterback while his athleticism put him on the field for six games, mostly at wide receiver.
The Hornets have improved their speed and athleticism at the wide out position this year. Danny McEvoy’s six touchdown receptions tied him for fourth in the MIAA last season. He is the leading receiver returning for ESU with 25 catches for 326 yards.
Speedster Brian Murphy has made the move from running back to receiver this season.
True freshman James Kelly was a two-star recruit by rivals.com. Kelly along with Chris Woods and Shjuan Richardson have a chance to make an immediate impact for ESU.
