
October 11, 2008-The Emporia State Hornets could not overcome four turnovers and a blocked punt in a 14-6 loss to Washburn in the football edition of the Turnpike Tussle.
The Hornets held the Ichabods to a pair of first half field goals despite WU starting three drives inside the Hornet 35 yard line. The first Ichabod touchdown came with 14:19 left in the game on a four yard touchdown run by Terrence Lowe. After trading punts the Hornets got on the board with a seven play 96 yard touchdown drive that was capped by a 42 yard touchdown pass from Andre Sloan El to Danny McEvoy with 8:18 left in the game.
Defensively Katrel Larkins and Chris Poston both had nine tackles. Poston had two pass break ups while Larkins had a sack. Tyler Mikkelson had six tackles, 1.5 TFL two forced fumbles and an interceptions.
Sloan El finished the game 16 of 27 for 188 yards and a touchdown, with two interceptions. McEvoy was the leading receiver with 48 yards on two catches and the touchdown. Sloan El was also the leading rusher on the day for ESU with 32 yards on 15 carries.
The Hornets are back in action next Saturday at Missouri Western. Kick-off is set for 1:30 p.m. at Spratt Memorial Stadium in St. Joseph, Mo.
