September 11, 2007-The Emporia State football team will bring a 2-0 record into their home opener on Saturday and there is a full day of activities surrounding it. The game day experience on the ESU campus has grown steadily over the years. From tailgating to in-game promotions to a post game food festival a Hornet Football Saturday is now more than just a game.
The tailgating areas around Welch Stadium have been more clearly defined for
the upcoming season. This year, tailgating with 3.2% beer or cereal malt
beverages will be allowed in the parking lots immediately surrounding the Milton Tennis Courts and in the Gray Permit lot north of the Student Recreation Center.
Individuals consuming or possessing beer or cereal malt beverages must be of
legal drinking age and be within the designated areas. Fans that bring their own
grill are asked to dispose of their ashes in the hot charcoal barrels that will be
provided in the parking lots around Welch Stadium.
Festivities get underway at 10:30 a.m. at the Black Hole, sponsored by Union
Activities Council, the E-Zone and KISS 103.1FM. The Black Hole is a student centered
tailgating area located north of the Student Recreation Center. There
will be chances to win $103.10, free give aways and plenty of free food. The
band Cardinal Trait will provide the music.
The Subway Pass, Kick and Catch contest will hold it’s qualifying rounds
beginning at 10:30 a.m. Two-person teams consisting of a current ESU Student
and their immediate family member will compete for a chance to win a Family
Day Game Pack from the ESU Memorial Union Bookstore. The finals will be held
at half time of the game on Jones Field at Welch Stadium.
The Watering Hole presented by Waters True Value will be making its return to
the Milton Tennis Courts beginning at 11 a.m. For $15 a game or a season ticket
of $60, fans can be a part of a sports bar-like atmosphere just steps from Welch
Stadium. Smoked pork loin, smoked walnut & apple chicken sausage highlight
the menu. Emporia’s Radio Stations will be on hand with the Rolling Radio Show
to provide music from Mix 104.9FM.
HornetFest will be available in the west end of the Milton Courts with inflatable games for kids beginning at 11 a.m. as well. Area youth can get free admission to all ESU Hornet football games by joining Corky’s Crew. For $25 members get a t-shirt, free admission to all ESU home football games and a chance to follow the Hornets onto the field.
A discounted ticket is available for family members of current ESU students. If pre-ordered by 5 p.m. Friday, September 14, ESU family members can get a general admission ticket for just $4.
Halftime is packed with a performance by the ESU Marching Hornets, a Human Sphere Race sponsored by Farm Bureau, recognition of the ESU Hornet Heritage Award and the finals of the Subway Pass, Kick and Catch contest. The Pyramid Pizza Fan of the Game will be named between the third and fourth quarters.
Post game appetites can be taken care of at the International Food Festival beginning at 4 p.m. on the Morse Hall Lawn immediately after the game. For those with a less exotic appetite, the Fourth Annual ESU Football Traditions Barbecue will be held at the Jenkins Ranch north of Emporia. The social hour begins at 5 p.m. with the barbecue scheduled to go from 6-11 p.m.
After two road wins to open the season, this is the first opportunity to see the Hornets in action at Welch Stadium. Season ticket sales are slightly ahead of last year and season tickets will be available throughout this week at the ESU Athletic Ticket Office in the Memorial Union.
