HORNETS DROP FIRST GAME
September 22, 2007 - Emporia State turned the ball over three times on the way to a 26-12 loss at Ft. Hays State on Saturday night.
The Hornets took the opening kick-off and drove 83 yards in four plays to take a 7-0 lead on a Seville Ko 30 yard touchdown run. The Tigers got on the board with a 45 yard field goal with 7:06 left in the first quarter. FHSU took the lead on a one yard Jordan Hickel run. The Tigers got the ball on an Andre Sloan El interception.
Ft. Hays State went up 16-7 on a 16 yard pass from Shane Jackson to Cody Witte. The extra point was blocked and Travis Lee gave ESU two-points on the defensive return. It is the first defensive extra point in ESU history and the eighth defensive return on an extra point in MIAA history. Wayne Gleason made it 16-12 with his first career field goal, a 30 yarder with :09 left in the first half. Justin Barr connected on a 44 yard field goal with 1:49 left in the third quarter to put the Tigers up 19-12.
Possibly the biggest play of the game came on the final play of the third quarter. Sloan El hooked up with Katrel Larkins down the left sideline for a 16 yard gain only to have the ball stripped by Joey Cotton. The ball bounced up into C.J. Lovett’s hands and he returned it 44 yards to the ESU 20 yard line. FHSU would score six plays later on a 20 yard run by Hickel for a 26-12 lead.
The Hornets would twice get inside the Tiger 30 yard line the rest of the game, but threw an interception and ran out of time on their final possession.
Emporia State is back on the road next week, when they travel to Missouri Southern, a 17-16 winner over Southwest Baptist on Saturday night. Kick-off from Hughes Stadium in Joplin, Mo. is set for 6 p.m.
NOTES:
ESU’s Seville Ko had 105 yards on 14 carries and a touchdown. He also had five receptions for 19 yards. Blake Ringwall led ESU with a game high 12 tackles. Barr’s 44 yard field goal was the first points ESU has given up in the third quarter this year. FHSU had 77 offensive plays to ESU’s 59 offensive plays.
