MSSU's Kimi Shank wins
her second straight MIAA Cross Country Championship |
October 24, 2009-Kimi Shank won her second straight individual championship to lead Missouri Southern to a dominating team win in the 2009 MIAA Women’s Cross Country Championships at Jones Park in Emporia. Southern outscored runner-up Truman by 39 points on the way to their fourth straight conference title.
MSSU had six of the top seven runners with Truman’s Dani Dell’Ocro finishing third to break up the Lion sweep. Shank’s time of 21:01.07 is the fastest time in an MIAA Championship meet over 6K and is a Jones Park 6K record. MSSU’s Marlee Tegenkamp placed sixth overall to earn MIAA Freshman of the Year honors.
MSSU’s 18 points was the lowest score in MIAA history, surpassing Southeast Missouri State’s 20 point showing in 1984.

Missouri Southern also took the men’s team title with a 47-53 win over Pittsburg State. Southwest Baptist’s Michael Pierce won the individual championship by nine seconds over MIAA Freshman of the Year Laban Sialo of Central Missouri. Brennon Benkert finished in third place to lead the team champions.
Pierce’s time of 24:35.23 is the second fastest time ever on the Jones Park course and is the fastest winning time over 8K in the MIAA championships since Rob Jensen won the 1992 meet in 24:18.0 for Truman.
The NCAA South Central Regional Championships will be held on November 7 in Abilene, Texas.
