HORNET MEN WIN MAPLE LEAF INVITATIONAL

September 8, 2008-Skyler Delmott won the individual championship as the Emporia State men won the Maple Leaf Cross Country Invitational on Saturday. The ESU women placed third behind Katie Mona’s second place finish.

"Skyler started his junior year with a strong win,” said ESU head coach Dave Harris. “Going to the front he saw that no one was willing to go with him so he led from start to finish.

ESU placed four runners in the top eight and nine in the top 25 of the 111 person field. Marcus Summers, Adam McGovern, and Will Hohmeier placed sixth through eighth for the Hornets.

“After Skyler we had only a 21 second gap between runners two through eight - so we are developing some competition for spots as well as good team pack running,” said Harris. “It was a nice win for men although they should be tempered with achievement because there are a lot of tough races ahead.”

Katie Mona placed second over all for the Hornet women in her first collegiate race. All five of ESU’s scorers placed in the top 26 with Tiffany Baum in 18 th, Morgan Frehe in 20 th, Christy Weller in 21 st and Kathryn Davison in 26 th overall.

“Katie Mona was very impressive in her ESU debut pushing Sarah Williams to a course record over the 4 K distance,” said Harris. “She is not afraid to run up in the front and challenge other athletes who might be more mature. In the women we had two freshmen and three sophomores in our top five. Our strength is our enthusiasm and youth and it is also our weakness. We just need to continue to race for personal bests right now.”

The Hornets will be back in action on Friday at the Mule Run in Warrensburg, Mo.

“I’m pleased with our start of season,” said Harris. “We trained well last week and did not key on this meet - but the athletes are always excited with first meet and came out and ran well. Freshmen are always the most excited and nervous at the first meet and for the most part they handled the competition well and I think gained some confidence.”
