ESU SHOWS WELL AT SOUTHERN STAMPEDE

EMPORIA, KAN. (September 18, 2007)--The Hornets cross country results from last weekend's Southern Stampede are finally official. The ESU men placed 13th in front of three regionally ranked teams. The ESU women placed 26th running without top runner Jonel Rossbach.

After review of the results, Skyler Delmott led the Hornet men with a career best time of 25:29 over the eight kilometer course to place 36th overall our of 337 male runners. Brock Ternes was the second runner for ESU with a time of 25:41 for a 44th place finish.

"Mens race was very confusing," said ESU head coach Dave Harris. "I was up at the 600 meters up the course when starting gun went off. As I was watching for our team to come by I couldn't find anyone in the top half and in fact we were running in the back of the field. I was very disappointed in how we got out. It was not until later that I found out another teams runner was pushed into our guys and four of them went down and another two were spiked badly."

ESU ended up in 13th place overall out of a total of 36 teams that fielded full teams. The Hornets finished in front of regionally ranked Tarleton State, Ft. Hays State and Truman.

"We were put in a hole to begin race and tried to race back into it," said Harris. "Considering the circumstances I give the guys credit. With all that happened I was just glad to get the team back to Emporia. There has got to be better days ahead for this team!"

The women ran six freshmen and placed 26th out of 37 scored teams. Top runner and defending MIAA champion Jonel Rossbach was held out of the race, but did go over the course in a practice run on Friday.

""The women ran with just the six freshmen and gained experience in a large field race," said Harris. "Jonel trained through the weekend as she is in a heavy training period and I have wanted to keep her races down. We felt that last year at outdoor nationals in North Carolina she was a little tired from so many races. I also think it was good for our freshmen to just run without her. It gave them the responsibility for team score."

Chelsea Clanton led ESU with a time of 19:43 over the five kilometers. the Hornets had good grouping with a pair of back to back finishes and the top five runners all within 13 seconds of each other.

""Training takes on great importance these next two weeks in September," said Harris. "This will be the highest volume of the season. I am looking forward to pushing our groups make some progress before we line up at home September 28."

ESU will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 28 at the ESU/Jock's Nitch Invitational. The meet will be held at Jones Park in northwest Emporia and will get underway at 5 p.m. with the women's race.
