ESU’S ROSSBACH EARNS ALL-AMERICAN HONORS
November 17, 2007-Emporia State’s Jonel Rossbach finished fourth at the NCAA Division II Cross Country National Championships in Joplin, Mo.
The senior from Omaha, Neb. covered the six kilometer course in 20:47.5 to earn All-American honors for the second straight year. Her fourth place finish is the best ever by an ESU woman at the NCAA Championships and matches the top finish all-time at a championship meet. ESU Hall of Honor member Lesha Wood placed fourth at the 1980 NAIA National Championships. With a fourth place finish, Rossbach earned her fourth All-American honor in cross country, indoor and outdoor track.
"Great race for Jonel. She put herself in position in third place throughout the race - running behind (Jessica) Pixler of Seattle Pacific and (Winrose) Karunde from ACU," said ESU head coach David Harris. "She was determined to go after a win. She earned everything she has achieved in cross country by hard work and consistent training in the off season."
Rossbach maintained her third position until Tanya Gaurmer of national champion Adams State moved to third with less than 200m remaining. Rossbach was the top finisher from a school that did not figure in the team scoring.
"She is improving in each season and has a commitment to competitive running after college," said Harris. "Other than Kadri Kelve (13th in 2002) she is the only other ESU women to recieve a top 15 award at the NCAA Awards Banquet held tonight."
ESU will begin the indoor track and field season on December 7-8 in Manhattan, Kan. at the Carol Robinson Pentathlon and KSU All-Comers Meets.
