ESU’S ROSSBACH REPEATS AS MIAA CHAMPION
October 20, 2007-- Emporia State’s Jonel Rossbach became the ninth woman to win two MIAA individual cross country championships on Saturday in Kirksville, Mo. Skyler Delmott earned All-MIAA honors with his seventh place finish to lead the ESU men to a fourth place finish in the team standings.

Rossbach won her second championship in convincing fashion. Her time of 22:06.65 was nearly 36 seconds in front of the second place finisher.

“It was a great run by Jonel to win her second consecutive MIAA individual championship,” said ESU head coach Dave Harris. “She was in control the whole way. She chose not to lead until just past the halfway mark and then pulled away.”

Rossbach’s first place finish could not help pull the Hornets out of an eighth place team finish. Kylie Bookout was the second ESU runner and finished in 32 nd place. Chelsea Clanton was the Hornets third finisher and placed 43 rd overall.

“The women had a tough time with the strategy of running with Truman,” said Harris. “We beat them at our home meet, but with the meet at their course, they prevailed. With six freshmen on the women’s team we have a chance to get much better in the future.”

Delmott had the highest finish by an Hornet since Ryan Weston finished fifth in 2004. Brock Ternes placed 13 th and Sloane Kern was 19 th as they both earned honorable mention All-MIAA honors. Kern was the top freshman finisher and earned the inaugural MIAA Cross Country Freshman of the Year Award. Eric Wellman was 22 nd for ESU in his final MIAA Cross Country Championships meet.

“The men ran very well,” said Harris. “I thought Brock Ternes ran his best race ever in an ESU uniform.”

The Hornets finished fourth as a team after placing eighth in 2006 and not fielding a team in 2005.

“The men met our goal to pull up into the upper division of the MIAA after finishing last a year ago,” said Harris. “Now we head onto regionals where the men will step up to the 10K distance.”

ESU will take part in the NCAA Division II South Central Regional Championships on Nov. 3 in Joplin, Mo.
