ESU'S ROSSBACH WINS MIAA

EMPORIA, KAN. (October 21, 2006)--Jonel Rossbach became the third woman from Emporia State to win an individual MIAA Cross Country championship as the Hornet women finished sixth as a team on Saturday. The Hornet men placed eigth as a team with Skyler Delmott finishing in 19th place as the top ESU runner.  

Rossbach joined Kadre Kelve and Tara Hudspeth as individual champions for the Hornets. She ran a controlled race through the first five kilometers and kicked it over the final 1000 meters to pull away for the win. Krysta Fennewald placed 14 th as the number two runner for ESU.  

“It was a fast course and Jonel’s time was her best ever over six kilometers,” said ESU head coach Dave Harris. “But her time wasn’t what was important, her winning was. Krysta Fennewald provided a great 1-2 punch in this race and as our top two lead this team all season.”  

The Hornets only had three cross country runners at the beginning of the season and added four walk-ons to fill out the team.  

“I thought that to the woman each of our team members ran their best race of the year,” said Harris. “We could have easily finished at the bottom of the MIAA, but their racing efforts brought us up to sixth.”  

Delmott placed 19 th to lead the ESU men. The eighth place finish was the worst for the ESU since joining the MIAA after redshirting the entire team last season.  

“The men did not fare well. I do not feel any of our men ran up to their best race fo the year,” said Harris. “I like this group, but it does not sit well to be last in the team rankings. Considering our great workouts over the last several weeks, I felt they were ready to peak. I will analyze this one for some time.”  

The Hornets are back in action at the NCAA South Central Regional on Nov. 4 in Warrensburg, Mo.
