
July 23, 2009-The schedule for the two-time defending MIAA champion Emporia State Lady Hornets has been released and it will include 13 home dates at White Auditorium. ESU has won 22 of their last 23 games in White Auditorium and have been ranked in the top six in the nation in attendance each of the last 12 years.
The Lady Hornets will open the season with an exhibition contest at NCAA Division I WNIT Runner-up Kansas on Nov. 8 in Allen Fieldhouse. ESU took KU to overtime in their last meeting, an 84-74 loss in 2007.
The regular season will begin with NAIA opponent Benedictine on Nov. 17 prior to the ESU Tip-Off Classic on Nov. 20-21 in White Auditorium. ESU will open the classic against Lone Star opponent Eastern New Mexico on Friday and take on Evangel, who advanced to the NAIA Division I National Tournament in 2009, on Saturday.
The Lady Hornets will spend Thanksgiving weekend in Joplin, Mo. at the MSSU Thansgiving Classic. ESU will play Heartland Conference foe UA-Ft. Smith on Friday and Avila on Saturday. Avila was 24-7 a year ago.
The MIAA schedule begins on Dec. 2 when ESU travels to Northwest Missouri. After a trip to Missouri Western on Dec. 5, the Lady Hornets will play host to Central Missouri on Dec. 12 in the MIAA home opener.
The semester break will begin with a trip to the West Coast for a pair of games against California Collegiate Athletic Association teams. ESU will take on CSU-East Bay on Dec. 21 in Hayward, Calif. and then go across the bay to San Francisco State on Dec. 22.
The final two months of the season will be packed with MIAA action beginning with a home game against Truman on Dec. 28. The Lady Hornets will begin a three game road trip with a New Year's Eve contest at Neb.-Omaha. That will be followed by a trip to Southwest Baptist on Jan. 2 and a Jan. 6 game at Missouri Southern.
Pittsburg State will come to White Auditorium on Jan. 9 before the first edition of the Turnpike Tussle against Washburn takes place on Jan. 16 in Topeka. A three game home stand starts on Jan. 20 when Fort Hays State wraps up the first half of the conference season. The Lady Hornets will entertain NWMSU in a Sunday afternoon contest Jan. 24 to open the second half of conference play. MWSU will invade White Auditorium on Jan. 27 to end the three game home stand.
ESU will travel to Kirksville, Mo. on Jan. 30 for the second meeting with TSU and then go to Warrensburg, Mo. on Feb. 3 for the return trip to UCM. Another three game home stand is in place beginning on Feb. 6 against UNO and will include SBU on Feb. 10 and MSSU on Feb. 13 in White Auditorium. The Lady Hornets will then travel to PSU on Feb. 17 before getting a week to prepare for the final regular season Turnpike Tussle. WU will come to White Auditorium on Feb. 24 for Senior Night for Lady Hornets Cassondra Boston, Jamie Augustyn, Lacy Corker, and Sophia Lenard. The six largest Lady Hornet crowds in White Auditorium have come against the Lady Blues. The regular season will end with a Sunday afternoon game on Feb. 28 at FHSU.
The MIAA Tournament will return to historic Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Mo. for the eighth straight year and will run from March 4-7. The Lady Hornets have been in the tournament championship three times since it moved to Kansas City. The South Central Regional Tournament is set for March 12-15 at a yet to be determined campus site. ESU has played in seven straight NCAA tournaments and has been to the tourney 12 times in the last 13 years. The NCAA Division II Elite Eight is scheduled to be played March 23-26 at the Civic Arena in St. Joseph, Mo. The Lady Hornets have advanced to the Elite Eight four times.
The Lady Hornets were 26-6 a year ago and won their second straight MIAA regular season championship. It was the seventh MIAA regular season title in the last 12 years for ESU. First-team All-MIAA selection Cassondra Boston leads a group of three returning starters and eight letterwinners including MIAA All-Defensive Team standout Sophia Lenard.
