LADY HORNETS FALL IN MIAA CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

March 8, 2009-Top seeded Emporia State battled back from a 13 point second half deficit to take a lead with 6:14 left, but second seeded Washburn hit 17 of 21 free throws in the final 5:59 of the game to secure a 78-69 victory in the MIAA Women's Basketball Tournament Championship Game in Kansas City, Mo.

Emporia State fell behind 16-4 to open the game before going on a 12-1 run to pull within a point at the 10:35 mark. Cassondra Boston scored nine straight for ESU to open the run.  WU would push the lead back to 11 at the half as Janice Bright hit a three at the buzzer to give the Blues a 43-32 lead.

In the second half Alli Volkens scored six points in an 8-0 ESU run to get within 54-53 wtih 11:21 remaining and tied it at 57-57 on an Ida Edwards lay-up with 8:22 left.  Edwards layup with 6:14 remaining gave ESU their first lead of the second half at 61-59 before WU closed the game scoring 17 of their final 19 from the free throw line with Stancia Graham going six of six.

Cassondra Boston led all scorers with 25 points and dished six assists in 38 minutes for ESU.  Alli Volkens added 15 points off the bench and Ida Edwards had 11 for the Lady Hornets.  Janice Bright matched Boston for game high honors with 25 points and 12 boards. Graham added 17 points and Brett Ulsaker scored 14 for WU.

ESU will find out their postseason tournament fate later tonight.
