
March 6, 2009-Ida Edwards scored 18 points with 11 boards and three blocks as top seeded and #10 ranked Emporia State defeated Southwest Baptist 81-65 in the first game of the MIAA Women's Basketball Championship Tournament in Kansas City, Mo.
ESU trailed 4-2 before going on a 14-0 run to take a 16-4 lead with 11:37 left in the first half. Six different Lady Hornets scored during the run as the lead would not drop below double digits the rest of the game.
The Lady Hornets led 36-23 at the half despite turning the ball over 12 times in the opening frame as they held the Bearcats to just .270 shooting from the field in the first half.
Cassondra Boston added 13 points and four assists for ESU and Brittney Miller reached double figures for the sixth time this season with 10 points.
Saturday the Lady Hornets will take on the winner of the second quarterfinal game between Central Missouri and Missouri Southern. Tip-off on Saturday is set for 6 p.m.
NOTES:
ESU advances to the MIAA Tournament semifinals for the 12th time in 13 years.
ESU's MIAA Tournament record is now 22-9 (.710) in 14 appearances.
Andrea Leiker scored seven points to move into a tie for 18th with Kay Clarke in career scoring at ESU with 1,138 points.
Cassondra Boston had four assists to move past Aneta Kausaite for tenth in career assists at ESU with 308.
Ida Edwards three blocks moved her into a tie with Michelle Stueve and Alli Volkens for tenth in career blocked shots at ESU with 69.
