#5 LADY HORNETS FALL AT #13 WASHBURN

February 25, 2009-Sophia Lenard scored a career high 26 points but it wasn't enough as #5 Emporia State fell 87-74 at #13 Washburn on Wednesday night.  The Lady Hornets can still win the outright MIAA regular season title with a win over Ft. Hays State on Saturday in White Auditorium.

There were seven ties and 11 lead changes in the first half before WU went on a 10-0 run to take a 37-27 lead with 3:40 remaining in the opening frame.  The Lady Hornets went on a 7-0 run to pull within 50-47 with 15:14 left in the game and trailed by just three with 4:35 left before the Lady Blues went on 13-1 run to seal the win.  Jessica Mainz scored  eight points during the run and had ten of her 12 points in the final 1:47 including a perfect eight of eight performance from the free throw line.

Ida Edwards was the only other Lady Hornet in double figures finishing with 16 points and eight rebounds.

Emporia State will play their final regular season game on Saturday night against Ft. Hays State.  A win against the Tigers will give the Lady Hornets sole possession of the MIAA regular season championship.  Tip-off for Senior Night  is set for 5:30 p.m. at White Auditorium.  Seniors Allie Renberg, Ida Edwards and Andrea Leiker will be honored prior to the game.
