January 10, 2009-Cassondra Boston scored on a leaner in the lane with 2.5 seconds left to give #10 Emporia State a 78-76 victory over Pittsburg State on Saturday night in Pittsburg. Boston scored all 12 of her points in the second half as ESU moved to 13-2 overall and 7-1 in the MIAA.
ESU jumped out to a 15-2 lead to open the game and led by as many as 20 points in the first half before PSU came back. The Gorillas opened the second half on a 14-2 run to take a 46-45 lead with 15:24 left in the game. ESU would go back up by eight points on a pair of Andrea Leiker free throws with 9:50 left and led by seven at 70-63 with 5:03 remaining. PSU then went on a 13-2 run to take a 76-72 lead with 1:19 left. Boston hit a jumper with 1:11 left to pull ESU within two and Ida Edwards tied the game on a putback with 38.8 seconds left. Bailey Waugh missed a three pointer with ten seconds left setting up Boston's heroics.
Edwards had 21 points and 14 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season. Lenard ended with 14 points and four assists while Lacy Corker tossed in ten off the bench.
ESU is back in action on Saturday, January 17 when they play host to #3 Washburn. Tip-off for the Turnpike Tussle is set for 5:30 p.m. in White Auditorium.
