January 28, 2009-The #4 Emporia State Lady Hornets scored the first 16 points of the second half in the way to an 89-70 win over Missouri Western on Wednesday night in St. Joseph, Mo.
The trio of Ida Edwards, Cassondra Boston and Andrea Leiker all scored 16 points to lead ESU in scoring and were joined in double figures by Allie Renberg with ten points. Edwards and Renberg each had double-doubles for ESU. Edwards had 13 rebounds to go with her 16 points while Renberg added 12 rebounds.
ESU trailed by as many as nine in the first half and did not take their first lead until a Leiker jumper capped an 8-0 run and gave the Lady Hornets a 39-38 lead with 1:19 left in the half. The Griffons missed their first 13 shots after half as ESU built a 61-43lead at the 11:58 mark.
Coupled with Central Missouri’s home loss to Missouri Southern, ESU now has a two game lead over four teams in the MIAA standings.
The next action for the Lady Hornets will be on Super Bowl Sunday when they play host to Truman. Tip-off from White Auditorium is set for 1:30 p.m.
NOTES:
Andrea Leiker’s 16 points moved her to 21st on the ESU all-time scoring list.
