March 23, 2009-Emporia State’s Ida Edwards has become the latest Lady Hornet to earn All-American honors in women’s basketball. The senior from Yazoo City, Miss. was named a first-team State Farm All-American by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and a third-team Daktronics All-American by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Edwards was named the MVP of the MIAA after leading the league in field goal percentage, finishing second in rebounding, third in blocked shots and eighth in scoring. She was a unanimous first-team All-MIAA selection and named to the MIAA All-Defensive Team. Her 328 rebounds ranks this year ranked seventh in MIAA history.
“It is never an easy task to select just 10 players from hundreds as the best in Division II, but this group of 10 student-athletes made the job much easier,” said WBCA CEO Beth Bass. “Each one of these student-athletes has distinguished themselves above the rest, and we would like to honor them for their hard work.”
“State Farm is truly honored to recognize these outstanding student-athletes for their wonderful achievements, their dedication to the game of basketball and their commitment to their communities, said Pam El, Marketing Vice President for State Farm. “The State Farm Coaches All-America Team represents true excellence in the sport of women’s basketball, and we are extremely proud to be associated with these remarkable student-athletes.”
Edwards is the seventh Lady Hornet to earn first-team All-American honors from the WBCA. A Lady Hornet has been named All-American nine times in the last 12 years, beginning with Aneta Kausaite in 1998. In addition to Edwards and Aneta Kausaite, Jurgita Kausaite (1999), Tara Holloway (2000), Emily Bloss (2001), Kristie McClain (2003), and Michelle Stueve (2006, 2007, 2008) have garnered All-American recognition from the coaches association.
Three other Lady Hornets have earned Daktronics All-American status. Tara Holloway and Emily Bloss were back to back Daktronics Players of the Year in 2000 and 2001 while Michelle Stueve was a three-time Daktronics All-American from 2006-08.
The State Farm All-American team was selected by an online vote of the WBCA selection committee. The committee is comprised of one representative from each of the eight geographical regions of the WBCA and a chairperson.
