March 17, 2008—Michelle Stueve scored 25 points with a team high ten rebounds, but it was not enough as #25 Emporia State fell to #24 Washburn 73-58 in the NCAA Division II South Central Regional Championship game in Canyon, Texas.
The Lady Hornets trailed 30-22 at the half after giving up 15 points on 14 turnovers. The Lady Blues would open the second half on a 9-2 run to push the lead to 15 points with 16:00 left in the game. Stueve then scored seven points in a 10-0 ESU run that cut the lead to 39-34 with 10:55 remaining. Regional Tournament MVP Corky Stiger then scored five of her game high 31 points to push the lead back to double digits for WU.
The Lady Hornets then used a 15-8 run capped by a Stueve three-pointer to cut the lead to three at the 6:03 mark. The Lady Blues then hit 12 of 14 free throws in the final 3:13 to seal the win.
ESU ends the season 23-8 and advanced to the Sweet 16 for the third time in the last four years. WU advances to the Elite Eight where they will take on South Dakota, a 61-49 winner over Minnesota State-Mankato.
NOTES:
Stueve and Ida Edwards made the Regional All-Tournament team for ESU.
The double-double for Stueve was her fifth straight in NCAA Tourney play.
Stueve ends her career with 2,403 points and 1,040 rebounds.
The Lady Hornets were 100-27 in Stueve’s career with an MIAA regular season championship, three regional championship games and a trip to the Elite Eight.
Stueve’s 674 points this season are tied with Jurgita Kausaite for the fourth most in ESU history and her 102 made threes are a school record.
