#22 LADY HORNETS FALL IN MIAA TOURNEY

March 6, 2008-The second seeded Emporia State cut a 17-point deficit to four with 32 seconds left but seventh seeded Truman hit three of their final four free throws to hold on for a 77-70 win in the first round of the MIAA Tournament in Kansas City, Mo. It is just the second time in tournament history that a seven seed has upset a two seed.

The Bulldogs led 15-7 at the 11:13 mark before the Lady Hornets went on a 13-4 run to take their only lead of the night at 20-19 with 3:41 left in the half. Truman ended the half on a 12-4 run to take a 31-24 lead into the locker room. TSU used a 12-2 run to take their biggest lead of the night at 58-41 with 10:10 left in the game.

Michelle Stueve lead ESU with 17 points with 11 coming from the 7:00 mark until 1:21 was left in the game. Ida Edwards had her fourth double-double of the season with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

Katie Fowler led all scorers with 26 points for the Bulldogs.

ESU will find out their NCAA Tournament fate on Sunday night. The Lady Hornets will meet at 9:30 p.m. in room 206 of the HPER Building on the ESU campus to watch the webcast of the selection show.

NOTES:

This was the first time since 1996 that ESU has failed to make it to the semifinals of the NCAA Tournament.

Stueve’s 17 points moved her to 12 th in all-time NCAA Division II scoring with 2,339 points.

ESU led for a total of 11 seconds in the game.
