#14 LADY HORNETS DEFEAT #23 SHAW IN HAWAII

December 17, 2008-The #14 Lady Hornets defeated #23 Shaw 93-86 behind 26 points and eight rebounds from All-American Michelle Stueve and a career high 24 points and nine rebounds from freshman Alli Volkens on Monday afternoon in Honolulu, Hawaii. The win moved ESU to 6-2 on the season and 38-23 against ranked teams since 1997.

Shaw scored the first points of the game on a jumper by Na’Keiha Anthony only to see Lacy Corker answer with a three pointer six seconds later and the Lady Hornets would never trail the rest of the game. Stueve scored the final eight points of a 13-4 run to give ESU a 19-8 lead with 11:34 left in the first half. The Bears came back with a 14-3 run of their own to time the score at 22-22 with 8:10 left in the first period when Stueve and Volkens scored four points each in an 8-0 run to push the lead back to 30-22 with 5:46 left. After ESU took a 12 point lead with 1:15 remaining, Shaw scored the final six points of the period to head to the intermission down 42-36. Stueve had 18 points in the first half to lead the Lady Hornets.

ESU never let the lead get below four points after half and would lead by as many as 14 points on two occasions in the second half. The Lady Hornets would connect on seven of eight free throws in the final 5:00 as they secured their second win over a ranked Shaw team in three seasons.

ESU will take on Oklahoma Panhandle State on Tuesday at 4 p.m. (HST) at the Kilauea District Gym in Honolulu.

NOTES:

Stueve passed former Lady Hornet Emily Bloss and moved into ninth place in career scoring in the MIAA and is second all time at ESU with 1,918 points.
Stueve has now scored at least 19 points in every game this season and has hit 20 points in seven of eight games.
Volkens recorded career highs in scoring, rebounding, field goals made and free throws made.
Corker had a career high nine assists and only three turnovers.
Ida Edwards made her Lady Hornet debut with eight points and eight rebounds.
Cassondra Boston made her first appearance since injuring her ankle against Evangel.
ESU was outrebounded (46-45) for the first time this year as Shaw had 31 offensive rebounds after shooting .333 from the field.
It was the eight straight game ESU has held their opponent to under .400 shooting from the field.
The game was delayed nearly 45 minutes when Shaw misunderstood the game time and did not make their bus to the game on time.
