March 14, 2008-The #25 Lady Hornets shot .708 in the second half and held Southwest Baptist without a field goal for over four minutes at the start of each half on the way to an 82-66 win in the first round of the NCAA South Central Regional Tournament in Canyon, Texas.
Ida Edwards had a career high 24 points on 12 of 16 shooting with 11 rebounds to lead four Lady Hornets in double figures. Michelle Stueve had 17 points and 11 rebounds to give the Lady Hornets to players with double doubles for the second straight game.
ESU jumped out to a 13-4 lead before SBU scored their first field goal of the game. Stueve and Edwards combined to score ten points during the opening run. The lead would reach ten points on two occasions in the first half before SBU closed out the period on a 7-1 run to pull within 33-29 at the intermission.
The Lady Hornets opened the second half with a 13-0 run to take their largest lead of the game at 46-29 with 16:18 left. Edwards scored the first eight and Stueve the last five in the run.
Erica Souza led all scorers with 26 points for SBU after being held to six in the opening frame.
The Lady Hornets will take on the winner of the contest between top seed West Texas A&M and #8 seed Northwest Missouri State. Tip-off of the second round game is set for 8 p.m. on Saturday at the First United Bank Center in Canyon, Texas.
NOTES:
Michelle Stueve moved to within 23 points of breaking the ESU career scoring record. She now has 2,356 points.
Stueve has had double-doubles in her last three NCAA Tournament Games.
SBU scored 23 points off of 20 ESU turnovers.
ESU improved to 18-10 all-time in the NCAA Tournament and reached the regional semifinals for the ninth time in 12 years.
