LADY HORNETS FALL AT KANSAS

November 8, 2007--The #3 Lady Hornets overcame a 23-5 early deficit to force overtime, but the Jayhawks Danielle McCray scored 12 of her game high 36 points in the extra frame as Kansas pulled out a 74-64 victory.

ESU had turnovers on their first six possession and fell behind 6-0 before Michelle Stueve hit a pair of free throws at the 16:23 mark. Kansas would go up 23-5 thanks to 12 ESU turnovers in the first eight minutes of the game.

Cassondra Boston and Stueve would combine to score nine of ESU’s points during an 11-0 run to pull within 27-21 with 1:59 left in the half. A pair of Boston free throws sent the teams to the locker rooms with KU holding a 31-26 lead.
Stueve scored the first four points of the second half and Andrea Leiker hit a three pointer to tie the score at 33-33 with 16:41 left in the game. The Jayhawks responded with a 12-0 run of their own to go ahead 45-33 with 10:51 left before Stueve broke the run with a jumper in the paint.

McCray hit a three pointer with 6:41 left to put KU ahead 50-42. Alli Volkens then hit four straight free throws to ignite a 8-0 ESU run. Boston’s three with 3:51 left capped the run and gave the Lady Hornets a 51-50 lead with 2:50 remaining.

McCray snapped a 4:15 scoring drought for KU with a three pointer to give the lead back to the Jayhawks with 2:26 left. Boston tied the score on a lay-up with 1:37 left and Andrea Leiker stole the ball and converted two free throws to give the lead back to ESU with 1:19 remaining. McCray drew a charge with 1:03 left and converted both free throws to tie the game at 55-55. Nicollette Smith missed a three pointer as time expired to send the game to overtime.

The Lady Hornets took the lead to start the extra frame on a back door lay-up by Stueve. The Jayhawks then went on a 15-2 run thanks to 11 points from McCray to seal the victory.

Cassondra Boston led ESU with 29 points while All-American Michelle Stueve scored 19 points with nine rebounds. Freshman Alli Volkens scored nine points and added a game high 11 rebounds before fouling out in the overtime.

ESU will play host to Tabor on Monday in their final exhibition game. Tip-off from White Auditorium is set for 7 p.m.
