#13 LADY HORNETS OPEN MIAA PLAY WITH WIN AT FHSU

January 2, 2008-All-American Michelle Stueve scored the first ten and last seven points of the game for ESU as the Lady Hornets defeated Ft. Hays State 68-62 on Wednesday in Gross Coliseum. The MIAA opener for both teams saw ten ties and 13 lead changes.

The Tigers scored the first four points and had an 11-5 lead when the Lady Hornets went on an 11-0 run to take a 16-11 lead with 9:53 left in the half. FHSU retook the lead with an 8-2 run to go up 20-18 with 5:38 remaining. The lead went back and forth the rest of the half until FHSU’s Meshia Mason hit a jumper at the buzzer for a 28-26 Tiger lead at the half.
There were six lead changes and four ties in the first half of the second period before ESU went on a 10-0 run in 1:27 to take the lead for good. Ida Edwards started the run with a lay-up at the 8:39 mark and ended it with a lay-up with 7:12 left. Andrea Leiker also scored four points during the run and Stueve added the other two.

The Lady Hornets went 10 of 13 from the line in the last 2:32 with Stueve connecting on five of six with a lay-up in the final 49 seconds.

Stueve ended the game with 20 points and seven boards while Edwards had her first career double-double with 17 points and 10 boards. Leiker also reached double figures with 12 points for the Lady Hornets. Brianna Willhite led all scorers with 23 points for FHSU.

ESU will travel to Bolivar, Mo. on Saturday to take on Southwest Baptist. Tip-off from the Meyer Center is set for 1:30 p.m.

NOTES:
Stueve moved into seventh in MIAA career rebounding, passing UCM’s Rachel Matakas and now has 859 career rebounds.
Leiker had a string of 19 straight made free throws snapped in the second half.
FHSU shot .424 to snap a string of eight straight games in which ESU had held their opponents to under .500 from the field.
ESU is now 15-2 in MIAA openers and 9-1 under Brandon Schneider.
