March 26, 2008-Michelle Stueve broke a lot of records during her Lady Hornet career and she can add another one as she becomes the first ESU women’s basketball player to be named All-American by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) for three straight years.
The Olpe, Kan. native was ranked in the top ten nationally in scoring, three-point field goals percentage and made three-pointers. She was a unanimous selection for MVP of the MIAA. She led the league in three-point field goal percentage and was in the top four in scoring, rebounding, field goal percentage, free throw percentage and made three-pointers. Her 674 points scored this season are tied with Jurgita Kausaite for the fourth most in ESU history and sixth most in a single season in MIAA history
Stueve ended her career as the leading scorer in MIAA and ESU history with 2,403 points. She is the ESU career record holder in scoring, made three pointers, free throws made and free throw percentage. She ranks second all time in Lady Hornet career rebounding and field goals made, is tenth in blocked shots and 11th in steals.
She is the only Lady Hornet to finish her career with 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds, ending with 1,040 boards in 127 games. She is one of only three players in MIAA history to pull off the feat and the first since Central Missouri’s Tammy Wilson in 1989.
In her career, the Lady Hornets went 100-27 with three trips to the Sweet 16, an Elite Eight appearance and an MIAA regular season championship. She was named the MIAA Player of the Week 13 times in her career, including five awards this season.
An excellent student off the court, Stueve was a second-team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American this year and has been on the MIAA Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll every year she has been eligible.
This year’s team marks the first State Farm Coaches’ All-America Team, as Eastman Kodak held the previous sponsorship for 25 years. Selection committees in each of the eight WBCA geographical regions select ten of the top women’s basketball players in the nation to be honored.
“It is a very difficult job to choose just 10 players from hundreds as the best in Division II, but these 10 student-athletes are definitely it,” said WBCA CEO Beth Bass. “Each one has had an amazing season and they are all truly deserving of this honor.”
“State Farm is truly honored to recognize these outstanding student-athletes for their wonderful and amazing achievements,” said Mark Gibson, assistant vice president of advertising for State Farm. “The State Farm Coaches All-America Team represents true excellence in the sport of women’s basketball and we are extremely proud to be associated with these remarkable student-athletes.”
This is the eight time in the last 11 years that a Lady Hornet has been named All-American by the WBCA, the most ever by an MIAA institution since the WBCA began awarding All-Americans in 1983.
