February 25, 2009-Emporia State jumped out to a 6-1 lead and never trailed on their way to a 78-63 victory over Washburn in Lee Arena. The Hornets got 21 points each from Jeremiah Box and Robert Moores and Lamar Wilbern added 19 points.
The Ichabods cut the lead to four with 2:57 left in the half before the Hornets closed the frame on a 10-2 run to take a 41-29 lead into the locker room. Moores scored eight points during the run.
ESU's lead would reach 19 in the second half before WU mounted another comeback. After the Ichabods cut the lead to three with 4:33 left, Wilbern scored five straight points to push the lead back to 65-57 with 3:13 remaining. The Hornets would get the lead back to double digits on a Box three pointer and a follow dunk and then went eight for eight from the line in the final 1:05 to preserve the win.
The Hornets will wrap up the regular season on Saturday night against Ft. Hays State. Tip-off from Senior Night will be at approximately 7:30 p.m. ESU seniors Shang Ping, Alex Pyle and Spencer Allen will be honored prior to tip-off.
NOTES:
ESU could finish as high as third in the MIAA with a win over FHSU on Saturday night.
