January 10, 2009-Lamar Wilbern had 27 points and 16 rebounds as Emporia State defeated Pittsburg State 102-100 in an MIAA record tying four overtimes on Saturday night in Pittsburg, Kan.
Pitt State scored the first seven points of the game and led until the 2:40 mark of regulation when Adam Holthaus gave ESU a 70-68 lead. Rodney Grace tied it with 2:11 left and Holthaus gave the Hornets the lead back at the 1:48 mark. Carlos Taylor tied it for the Gorillas with 1:17 left and neither team scored the rest of the regulation.
The Gorillas scored the first six points of the first overtime, but the Hornets would score the final six points capped by a Holthaus layup with 2.3 seconds left to send it to the second overtime.
ESU took an 82-78 lead in the second overtime and led by three on Wilbern's lay-up with 2:06 left. Spencer Magana hit a three to tie it with 52.5 seconds left and both teams missed shots in the final 30 seconds to remain tied at 84-84 at the end of the second overtime. The lead changed hands twice in the third overtime with Taylor hitting a layup with 24.9 seconds left to force the final overtime.
The Hornets never trailed in the fourth overtime, taking the lead 27 seconds into the period on a Tim Nile layup. Wilbern hit four of six free throws in the fourth overtime and Robert Moores was two of four from the line in the final 9.1 seconds to seal the win.
Holthaus had a career high 19 points as ESU's bench outscored PSU's 52-5 on the night
With the win ESU moves into sole possession of second place in the MIAA, one half game behind SBU and one half game ahead of UCM and MSSU.
The Hornets are back in action on Saturday, Jan. 17 when they play host to Washburn. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. in White Auditorium.
NOTES:
ESU's last four overtime game was a 127-124 loss at Midwestern State on Dec. 20, 2007.
