November 17, 2008 -- The ESU men's basketball team hit 13 three-pointers and shot .574 on their way to an 87-55 victory over Eastern New Mexico in Portales, N.M on Monday. Jeremiah Box scored 28 points which is the most for a Hornet in a season opener since Robbie Ballard scored 28 in the 2001-02 season opener.
The Hornets jumped out early with a 12-2 start. Box scored eight points in the first four minutes of the ballgame including. ESU had 10 of their three-pointers at the break as they went into the locker room with a 49-23 lead. ESU shot .633 in the first half and shot .588 from the three-point line.
In the second half the Hornets extended the lead to as much as 36 points at 72-36 with 8:49 remaining.
Box was joined in double figures by Robert Moores who added 16 points for ESU. Shang Ping scored nine points, Lamar Wilbern added seven and Matt Boswell added six points. Boswell also led the way with six rebounds for ESU. Every Hornet had either points or rebounds in the game.
The Hornets will next be in action on Wednesday, Nov. 19 when they face Kansas State in Manhattan, Kan. The regular season game tips off at 7 p.m.
