#23 HORNETS FALL IN FOUR OT'S

December 20, 2007 -- With four of five starters out of the game, the Hornets were unable to close out against Midwestern State in a 127-124 loss. The score is the largest combined score in Hornets history. The Hornets shot an exemplary .556 for the game while holding MSU to .457 shooting on the night. The Hornets lost in the turnover battle however giving the ball over 29 times to the Mustangs 18 turnovers. The 124 points by the Hornets ties a record for the most points ever scored in a game.

DeAndre Townsend led all scorers with 33 points and had five assists. Wes Book scored 29 points and joined Marvin Lee is 20+ as Lee scored a career high 21 points. Caleb Tegtmeier and Andrew Davison were the other Hornets in double figures as each scored ten points.

The Hornets will take a break for the Holidays before resuming play against Fort Hays State on January 2 in Hays. Tip-off for that match-up is set for 7:30 p.m. from Gross Memorial Coliseum.

Game Recap

Both teams came out and got a quick two, then exchanged defensive rebounds and were deadlocked at 119 with 3:09 to play. Dane Kelly knocked down a three-point shot with 2:22 remaining to give the Hornets a 122-119 advantage. Nolan Richardson IV answered with a two of his own to pull the Mustangs within one. The Mustangs took a lead at 123-122, but again faltered at the line missing one of two and only stretching the lead to 124-122 with 49 seconds left. DeAndre Townsend hit a shot with 33.4 seconds to play to tie the game again at 124, this tied the largest number of points ever scored by the Hornets in a game. Russell Button was fouled and went to the line for the Mustangs with 25.3 seconds remaining where he hit both free throws giving MSU the 126-124 advantage. The Hornets missed on a three-point attempt with 11 seconds to play, opening the door for the Mustangs. Jeremy Ford went to the line, but failed on his first attempt.

The two teams fought to a dead heat again in the early going of the third overtime with Andrew Davison fouling out at the 2:34 mark in the third extra frame. The Hornets played for the final shot after making a clutch defensive stop with 28 seconds to play, but could not hit a shot forcing the game into it’s fourth overtime.

The two teams played in near deadlock in the second extra frame as the Hornets lost leading scorer to fouls at the 1:45 mark. The Mustangs got their first chance to take a lead in the extra frames when Trajinski Grigsby went to the line with 34 seconds remaining. Grigsby only managed to make one of the two shots. DeAndre Townsend hit a running lay-up in the lane with 1.7 seconds remaining to give the Hornets a 112-110 lead. Trajinski Grigsby hit a shot with 001 seconds remaining to force the game into a triple overtime.

The Hornets opened the overtime period on a 7-2 run to give them a 98-93 lead, led by four from Wes Book. With 1:17 remaining in the frame the Mustangs cut the lead to two at 100-98. The score was tied for the 10th time in the ballgame as the Mustangs tied up the score 100 with less than a minute to play. The score would stay that way as a Mustang turnover sent the game to a second overtime.

In the second frame the Hornets added three points to their 6-0 to take a 13 point lead at the 17:15 mark. The Mustangs followed then used an 8-2 run to climb back to within seven points at the 14:34 mark. Midway through the second period the Hornets answered a Mustang 5-0 run with a 4-0 run of their own to maintain a 68-60 advantage. The Mustangs answered with a 7-2 run to cut the lead to 73-69 with 7:28 remaining. With 6:12 remaining MSU’s Jeremy Ford had a four point play to cut the lead to four before DeAndre Townsend answered with a three-pointer to extend the advantage back to 79-73. MSU countered with a 3-0 as Caleb Tegtmeier fouled out at the 5:15 mark in the ballgame. The Mustangs employed a 6-1 run to cut the Hornet lead to one at the 3:29 mark, their smallest lead of the second half. ESU came out of a timeout with 3:21 to play and went on a 7-0 run to extend the advantage back to 87-79. The Mustangs went on a 7-0 run starting at the two minute mark to cut the lead by 87-86 with 1:22 remaining. Spencer Allen knocked down two free-throws to give ESU the 91-88 advantage. MSU answered with a bucket to cut the lead to one with 36.7 seconds remaining. The Mustangs tied the score with 0:03 showing on the clock, but missed an opportunity to go ahead as Chris Davis missed his second free-throw with a chance to give MSU the lead. The Hornets couldn’t come up with a last second button sending the game into an overtime session.

The Hornets opened the first half by falling behind the Mustangs by as much as eight early on before going on an 8-0 run to take a 20-18 lead. The Hornets and Mustangs traded baskets until ESU went on a 10-2 run to take a 48-41 advantage at the 4:00 mark. Wes Book scored five of his 15 first half points as part of a 6-0 run to close out the half and give the Hornets a 54-44 halftime advantage.
