November 15, 2007--The #23 Emporia State men's basketball team opened the season with an 89-73 win over Eastern New Mexico on Thursday in White Auditoirum. Wes Book had 20 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists to lead the Hornets. He became the 22nd Hornet to score 1000 points. Book now has 1,011 points to rank 21st in ESU history and needs one point to move into the top 20.
The first half saw seven ties and six lead changes before the Hornets closed the half on 15-5 run. Marvin Lee had the first four points of the run on a lay-up and pair of free throws. Andrew Davison capped the run with a three-pointer with 15 seconds left in the half.
ESU went up by 17 with 17:49 left in the game on a Book three pointer for a 54-37 lead. The Greyhounds would close to six witih 13:00 remaining, but could get no closer as ESU won their home opener for the tenth straight year and 26th time in the last 28 seasons.
Book had three steals and a block in addition to his near triple double. DeAndre Townsend had 16 points, eight assists, five rebounds and two steals while Marvin Lee added 18 points in his Hornet debut. Andrew Davison had 13 points off the bench and Jordan Fithian had a career high three blocked shots for ESU.
The Hornets will play host to Friends on Monday. The Falcons are ranked #20 in the NAIA Preseason Poll. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at White Auditorium.
