January 19, 2008-Emporia State came back from an early 18-4 deficit to defeat Central Missouri 84-75 in overtime on Saturday at the UCM Multipurpose Building. The win snapped the Mules 31 game home court winning streak.
DeAndre Townsend scored 24 points, with 17 coming after halftime, to lead five Hornets in double figures. The MIAA scoring and assist leader also added seven assists on the afternoon. Marvin Lee had 18 points and six boards for ESU. Caleb Tegtmeier finished with 17 points while Jordan Fithian and Wes Book each added ten points. Doug Moore had a career high four blocked shots, all in the first half for the Hornets and tied a career high for rebounding finishing with four.
In the first period the Hornets overcame a 24-12 UCM lead and rolled back using a 10-0 run to gain a 27-26 halftime advantage. The Hornets who shot just .231 for the opening 10 minutes came back and finished the frame shooting .407 for the half. On the other side the Mules shot .755 to start the period while they finished shooting only .296 from the field.
ESU moves to 8-7 on the year and evens their MIAA record at 3-3. The next action for the Hornets will be on Wednesday at Missouri Southern. Tip-off from Joplin, Mo. is set for 7:30 p.m.
NOTES:
The win was ESU’s first in three overtime games this year.
ESU was the last team to defeat UCM at home in an 86-78 overtime victory in 2006.
