HORNET MEN CLINCH SPOT IN MIAA TOURNAMENT

February 27, 2008—The Emporia State men shot .680 in the second half on their way to an 84-72 win at Truman on Wednesday night. DeAndre Townsend scored 27 points with nine assists and Wes Book added 21 as the Hornets clinched a berth in the MIAA Tournament.

The Hornets trailed by as many as 11 points in the first half and used a 5-0 run in the final 30 seconds to trail 33-32 at the half. ESU hit four three-pointers during a 12-4 run to take a 54-45 lead with 13:29 left in the game. TSU cut the lead to three on a Nick Certa jumper with 3:20 left before Book answered with a three to give the Hornets a six point lead. ESU ended the game hitting six of six free throws in the final 2:01 to secure the win.

ESU will wrap up the season on Saturday against MIAA Champion Southwest Baptist. It will be the final home game for six ESU seniors – Wes Book, Andrew Davison, Jordan Fithian, Marvin Lee, Caleb Tegtmeier, and DeAndre Townsend. Tip-off is set for 3:30 p.m. with senior recognition prior to the game.

The Hornets will then play in the noon game on Friday, March 7 against Southwest Baptist in the opening round of the MIAA Tournament.

NOTES:
Wes Book moved within one point of John Hughes for 12th in career scoring at ESU with 1,265 points.
DeAndre Townsend is now just 12 points from scoring 1,000 in his career at ESU.
