November 7, 2007--The #23 Emporia State Hornets trailed #14 Gonzaga 47-43 at the half, but a 9-0 run to open the second half and a 15-4 run to the end the game led to a 101-70 victory for the Bulldogs in Spokane, Wash.
Both teams started quickly in front of a sold out crowd at the McCarthey Athletic Center. ESU led 14-12 at the under 16 media timeout thanks to six of nine shooting from the field. The Zags were just as hot, hitting five of their first eight shots. GU would go on a 10-0 run to take a 24-16 lead at the 12:25 mark of the first half. The Hornets would get back to back three pointers from Caleb Tegtmeier and Wes Book to cut the lead to two at 30-28 with 7:16 left in the half. After Gonzaga went back up by seven, Dustin Andrews hit a three pointer with :43 left to send ESU to the lockerroom down just 47-43. The Hornets hit eight of 16 treys in the first half to offset an 8-1 deficit from the free throw line.
Gonzaga had five different players score during a 9-0 run to open the second half and take a 56-43 lead with 16:40 left. ESU closed the gap back to eight on a DeAndre Townsend three pointer with 16:00 remaining before GU used a 14-5 run to go up by 17 points at the 11:33 mark. The Zags then closed the game on a 15-4 run for the 101-70 final score.
DeAndre Townsend and Wes Book both had 17 points for ESU to share game high honors. Book also had five assists and two rebounds, while Townsend added three assists, three boards, a steal and a block. They were joined in double figures by Dustin Andrews with 10 points. Caleb Tegtmeier, Jordan Fithian and Marvin Lee all fouled out for ESU with over six minutes remaining in the game.
Jeremy Pargo had 16 points, seven assists, six rebounds and five steals as six Bulldogs reached double figures. Former Kansas Jayhawk Micah Downs had 14 points and five rebounds for Gonzaga.
ESU will make their first appearance in White Auditorium on Saturday night when they play their annual Alumni Game. Long-time ESU coach Ron Slaymaker will lead the alums. First team All-MIAA players Donta Watson and Robbie Ballard highlight the 11 former Hornets scheduled to return. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. in White Auditorium. This game is not part of the season ticket package and all seating will be general admission. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children and senior citizens.
