January 2, 2008 – The Hornets battled back from a ten point deficit with 3:18 to play, but couldn't complete the comeback as #23 ESU dropped its MIAA opener 79-77 at Ft. Hays State.
ESU took a one point lead on Marvin Lee's three-pointer with :32.0 left only to see FHSU's Terry Jeffries score in the paint with :20.1 remaining to give the Tigers a 78-77 lead. Latravius Turner then converted one of two free throws after a steal with :09.6 left. Wes Book's three-pointer at the buzzer missed sealing ESU's fate.
In the first period the Hornets outshot the Tigers .556 to .481 and held a 40-37 advantage going to the break. The Hornets also won the battle on the glass in the first half pulling down 19 boards while holding the FHSU to just eight rebounds.
Wes Book led all scorers in the game scoring 24 points and passed Cleo Gardner to move into 17th on the career scoring list with 1,150 points. DeAndre Townsend scored 21 points with nine of them coming in the final seven minutes. Marvin Lee joined them in double figures scoring 18 points in the ballgame. Jordan Fithian had a team high six rebounds as the Hornets beat out the Tigers on the boards 30-27.
The Hornets will continue their MIAA season when the travel to Bolivar, Mo. to take on Southwest Baptist on Jan. 5 at 3:30 p.m.
