HORNETS FALL IN MIAA TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

March 9, 2008-Number eight seed Emporia State fell to number two seed Northwest Missouri 57-51 in the MIAA Tournament Championship game on Sunday afternoon in Kansas City’s Municipal Auditorium. The Hornets became the first eight seed to advance to the tourney championship game.

DeAndre Townsend scored a game high 16 points, with 13 coming in the second half to lead the Hornets. Andrew Davison scored 12 points for ESU and was the only other Hornet in double figures. Jordan Fithian pulled down a game high nine rebounds for ESU.

After NWMSU jumped out to an 8-0 lead, ESU responded with a 9-0 run of their own to take a 9-8 lead at the 14:49 mark. The first half saw four ties and six lead changes and neither team led by more than four points in the opening period. The Hornets led 27-25 following a pair of Spencer Allen free throws with 2.5 seconds before the Bearcats Mike Larsen hit a three quarter court shot to give NWMSU a 28-27 lead going into the locker rooms.

The Hornets trailed by three following a Townsend jumper with 21 seconds left, but the Bearcats Mose Howard hit three of four free throws down the stretch to seal the win for NWMSU.

NOTES:

ESU set a MIAA record with 35 made three pointers, breaking the previous record of 30 set by MSSU in 1993.

DeAndre Townsend scored 70 points in the tourney to rank tenth in individual scoring for a tournament.

The 57 points were the fewest by the winner in the championship game in tourney history.

Townsend and Andrew Davison were named to the all-tournament team for ESU and were joined by NWMSU’s Hunter Henry and Lance Sullivan and WU’s Andrew Meile.
