HORNETS ADVANCE TO MIAA CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

March 8, 2008-Emporia State became the first #8 seed to advance to the MIAA Championship game with a 71-63 win over Ft. Hays State on Saturday night in Municipal Auditorium.

The first half had eight lead changes and three ties in the first eight minutes before FHSU used a 6-1 run to take a 19-14 lead at the 9:08 mark. The Tigers would stretch the lead to as many as eight in the opening frame before settling into a 32-28 lead at the half.

The Hornets used a 15-0 run over 2:46 in the second half to take a 45-36 lead with 13:36 left. DeAndre Townsend had eight of his game high 30 points during the run. The Tigers would get no closer than four points the rest of the night.

Caleb Tegtmeier added 13 points and Andrew Davison scored 11 for the Hornets. Jordan Fithian had a game high 10 rebounds for ESU. LaTravis Turner led FHSU with 15 points.

ESU will play the winner of the other semifinal between Washburn and Northwest Missouri on Sunday at 3:30 p.m.

NOTES:

This will be the first time in the tournament’s history a #8 seed has advanced to the MIAA Championship and only the third time a team seeded as low as #6 has won two games in the tourney.

Townsend, the MIAA regular season scoring leader, has scored 54 points in the first two games with 12 assists.

ESU has only played seven players in the two tournament games.

ESU has split with both WU and NWMSU.
