March 7, 2008 -- The Hornets used 16 three-pointers as they upset the top seeded
Southwest Baptist Bearcats 83-79. The upset was the first for a #8 seed since
Pittsburg State defeated Northwest Missouri State in 1996.
First team All-MIAA selection DeAndre Townsend scored 24 points to lead five Hornets players in double figures. Caleb Tegtmeier and Andrew Davison each added 15 points while Marvin Lee added 14 points. Jordan Fithian hit a career high two three-point field goals on his way to 11 points in the game. For the Bearcats Matt Rogers led the way with 21 points.
ESU trailed by one with :54 seconds remaining in the ballgame when Andrew Davison hit a 3-pointer with :34 seconds to play to give the Hornets a two point lead. The Hornets hit three of four free throws down the stretch to preserve the four point win.
The Hornets will now face the winner of Fort Hays State and Missouri Southern tomorrow at 6 p.m. from Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Mo.
