HORNETS UNVEIL 2007-08 MEN'S BASKETBALL SCHEDULE
EMPORIA, KAN. (Jul 20, 2007)--Exhibition match-ups with NCAA Division I powers Texas A&M and Gonzaga along with eight games against teams that made the NCAA Division II Tournament last year highlight the 2007-08 Emporia State men’s basketball schedule released today.
The Hornets will open the exhibition season on November 1 at NCAA “Sweet 16” team Texas A&M in College Station, Texas. It will be the sixth straight year ESU coach David Moe has squared off with Mark Turgeon in exhibition action. ESU will then return to Spokane, Wash. on November 7 to play Gonzaga. This will be the Hornets third exhibition contest against the ‘Zags and the first since 2004. This year’s Hornets will take on a group of Hornet Alumni on November 10 in White Auditorium in the final exhibition game.
Emporia State has taken the court against Division I opponents 16 times since 1992. Five of the games have come during the regular season - three against Kansas and one each against Kansas State and Northwestern Louisiana.
Emporia State will open the 14 game home schedule with Eastern New Mexico on November 15 in White Auditorium. ESU has won it’s last nine home openers and has not lost a home opener under head coach David Moe.
Seven of the nine non-conference games will be against NCAA Division II opponents, including five against South Central Regional foes. ESU’s non-conference opponents had a combined record of 136-121 (.529) last season.
The MIAA Tournament will be held in Kansas City for the fifth year, with the men playing the first round on Friday, March 7 with the semifinals on Saturday and the championship game Sunday.
ESU averaged 2,195 fans per game last season to rank 13th in the nation at the NCAA Division II level. Season tickets will go on sale October 1. ESU sold all but 42 of the reserved seats in White Auditorium to season ticket holders last year.
