March 30, 2009 -- The #3 Emporia State baseball team swept the turnpike tussle with a 10-1 and 9-8 win over Washburn on Monday. ESU had 20 hits on the day including four home runs. ESU outhit the Ichabods 20-13 on the day and took advantage of five WU errors.
In game one ESU used a nine run fourth inning to earn the 10-1 win. Jeremy Francis went one for three with a home run and three RBI. Conner Crumbliss finished three for four with two RBI and two runs scored. Ryan Anthony picked up his sixth win pitching 6.0 innings of scoreless baseball and allowing only one hit and finished with eight strikeouts.
In game two the Hornets got three runs in the eighth inning to come from behind for a 9-8 win. Conner Crumbliss, Mike Sharp and Marc Albers all hit solo home runs for ESU. Sharp finished three for five with two RBI while Andy Cotton went three for three and scored two runs. Dominic King pitch one inning of relief to pick up his third win while Diego Soto finished with his sixth save closing out the final two innings.
ESU will return home to face Bethany on Wednesday, April 1 with first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m. from Glennen Field.
