#8 ESU FALLS TO UNO IN MIAA TOURNEY

May 8, 2009 -- The #8 Emporia State baseball team fell 6-3 to Nebraska-Omaha in the first round of the MIAA Tournament in Kansas City, Kan. ESU got out hit 12-9 on the evening and stranded nine runners on base, scoring all their runs in the sixth and eighth inning.

Chris Kessinger started things off for the Mavericks by retiring six of the first seven Hornets. UNO got on the board early as they put up two runs in second inning and another in the third. They added two more in the fifth inning and one in the sixth.

The Hornets answered back in the sixth inning as Kellen Lane drove in a run and later Anthony Dreiling drove in the second run of the inning. Kenny Burkhead led off the eighth inning with a solo home run over the 396 sign in center field. Burkhead finished three for five on the night with one RBI and two runs scored. Andy Cotton was the only other Hornet with more than one hit going two for four on the evening.

On the mound Tyler Applehans earned his third loss, pitching 4.0 innings and striking out two. Dominic King pitched 4.1 innings in relief and allowed one more Maverick run.

ESU will now face #11 Central Missouri at 11 a.m. in an elimination game from Community America Ballpark in Kansas City, Kan.
