March 22, 2009 -- The #5 ESU baseball team earned a 3-1 series win with a 7-5 victory over Central Missouri in Warrensburg, Mo. on Sunday. For the Hornets it is the first time since joining the MIAA in 1992 that ESU has won the regular season series over UCM, the previous best was a split at home in 2007.
ESU struck first putting up a 1-0 lead in the first inning. The Mules answered in the third to tie it before ESU went ahead for good in the fifth inning with five runs. ESU finished with 12 hits including the only five extra base hits of the game. Conner Crumbliss finished the game going four for five with two double, a triple, three runs scored and two RBI. Jeremy Francis went two for five with a double and two RBI while Kenny Burkhead added a doublea and two RBI. Tyler Applehans pitched 5.2 innings striking out three to earn his fourth win of the season. Diego Soto came on to face the final batter after UCM rallied in the ninth and closed out the game to earn his fifth save of the season.
ESU, who is currently in first place in the MIAA, will return to the field on March 24 when they face Wayne State in Topeka, Kan. at Falley Field.
