April 25, 2009 -- The #3 Emporia State baseball team worked around a bases loaded jam to win game one 5-2 in eight innings, but could not withstand a Missouri Southern comeback falling 12-11 in game two. Both games saw the winner scoring in the eighth inning to close it out.
In game one ESU clung to a 2-2 tie heading into the bottom of the seventh inning. Diego Soto came into the game and pitched 2.1 innings of relief including working out of a bases loaded jam in the seventh, to earn his fifth win of the season. Soto allowed only one hit while striking out three in his relief appearance. At the plate Mike Sharp went two for four with two RBI and was joined by Caleb Williamson who also added two RBI.
In game two, ESU led 11-3 heading into the bottom of the eighth but saw the Lions plate nine runs to take the lead. ESU stranded a runner on the third in the top of the seventh inning. At the plate Kevin Wempe went three for three with three runs driven in. Kenny Burkhead and Jeremy Francis added two RBI's for ESU as well. Diego Soto earned the loss to go to 5-2 on the season.
ESU will try to earn the series split tomorrow in a scheduled nine-inning game at 12 noon in Joplin, Mo.
