July 9, 2009-Emporia State head baseball coach Bob Fornelli has announced the addition of starting pitcher Matt Robertson to the Hornets recruiting class for the 2010 season.
Robertson is a 6-1 right handed pitcher from Barton County CC and a native of Valley Center, Kan. He was 6-5 with a 5.11 ERA for the Cougars this spring. He had 40 strikeouts and only ten walks in a team high 79.1 innings pitched. He earned All League and All-State Honors as a senior at Valley Center HS in 2007. He has been drafted twice by the Detroit Tigers, in the 42nd round of the MLB draft following his senior year of high school and in the 49th round of the 2008 draft. He is the brother of Detroit Tigers pitcher Nate Robertson
This brings to 15 the total number of signees for the 2010 season for ESU. The Hornets were 49-14 last season and advanced to the NCAA Division II National Championship game. It was the second trip to the NCAA National Championship Tournament in four years. ESU has won three of the last four MIAA regular season titles.
