#14 ESU BRAVES THE COLD FOR 16-5 WIN OVER ROCKHURST

February 25, 2008 -- The #14 Hornet baseball team scored twice in the first inning and six times in the fourth to break the game open on their way to a 16-5 victory over Rockhurst. ESU scored their 16 runs on 13 hits including six of them going for extra bases as temperatures fell throughout the ball game.
Tyler Applehans took a no-hitter into the sixth before allowing a single through the right side. Applehans picked up his first win of the season allowing only three earned runs through his 5.2 innings of work. Daniel Waggoner pitched the final 3.1 innings of the game to pick up his first save of the season.
The Hornet fourth was highlighted by a three-run double from designated hitter Richie Stewart. Eric Shortell finished the game two for three with five RBI and hit a home run off the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh inning. All nine Hornet starters either had a hit, scored a run or drove in a run in the effort.
The Hornets are now 3-1 on the season and will take on Wichita State in a single nine-inning game tomorrow. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. from Eck Stadium in Wichita.
